02/02/2023: For my final project I decided to do an artefact opposed to a dissertation as it visually presents my signing skills. This will consist of two videos of me signing children's TV programmes. I have chosen a bedtime story and a normal TV programme. I'm going to do the bedtime story to do first as it would help me to practice the facial expressions required as an interpreter and help me improve the speed of my signing and order of sentences. The 'Hey Duggee' episode requires me to play different characters which is an even more advanced level interpreter style required.
I had two other ideas at the beginning of my project: completing a Level 1 BSL certificate and having a conversation with a deaf person in BSL. The problems that were raised with the certificate was that they were firstly really expensive, and there was no visual representation for my final project. As well as, opposed to having a conversation with a deaf person- hearing people can understand what I should be signing by doing the videos to television shows and it is easier to watch. I wanted to make sure I had a practical application of the skills I have learned and teach myself skills that could be used in a potential professional setting.
The research I am going to do in preparation for this project is going to mainly be into sign interpreters. I already know the basics of BSL as I have been learning that throughout my whole project however I do not yet know about styles of interpretation for example. I am also going to watch TV shows as some primary research and take notes on their sentence order, grammar, facial expression, body language and hand shapes.
My plan for filming the artefacts are to transcribe the words of the episodes and make sure I know all the signs required, and if not look them up. Next, I will begin learning the script. - I will learn it in small chunks with the video slowed then speed the video back up as soon as I am able to sign it through.
To go along with my artefact also have to produce a 1000 word commentary where I will write about the production of my artefact, the background of my chosen topic and the results of my final presentation.
28/04/2023: I have completed the two videos of myself signing. My bedtime story video was a greater challenge in terms of speed and I only managed to complete the video at around 75%. However, my 'Hey Duggee' video is at full speed and was only more challenging in the way I had to use my face more and the sentence order was more complex as I had never tried signing conversations before this.
