Deaf awareness week

Deaf awareness week takes place between the 2nd of May to the 8th. The week allows stories of deaf people and information to be shared, to spread awareness and empower and inspire other deaf children and people to celebrate their deaf identity and feel confident with their deafness.

This years deaf awareness week had a particular focus on 'Inclusion Deafness'. It aims to:
  • highlight the impact of hearing loss on everyday life
  • demonstrate the importance of mental health in people with hearing loss
  • increase visibility and inclusion of underrepresented groups
  • raise issues of deafness being overlooked within education and the workplace

My deaf story video

This video I have found particularly on the 'The Buzz' is so inspiring and positive and is an amazing representation of what deaf awareness week is about. It provides information on young deaf peoples experience with being deaf, what makes them special and what they want to be when they grow up. It also includes personal advice on what hearing people can do to be more respectful and change their perspective of deaf people.

Another video releases on the the 4th may by the charity 'Hear me out' is an interview with Kieran, a volunteer at the charity who is profoundly deaf and I happen to work with. I already know with my personal experiences of working with Kieran and just knowing him what an inspirational person he is and an amazing advocate for the deaf community. In the video Kieran talks about his journey in life and barriers he has faced to help spread deaf awareness. You can find the video on the Hear Me Out Facebook page.
