Why this topic

The first thing that drew me to the topic was learning a new skill. I easily get bored, but also take stressful subjects and something I could have full control over and occupy my mind with was very appealing. Learning sign language was something that had crossed my mind before when I overheard a conversation between two of my colleagues. I work in Sainsburys on the checkouts and we have two deaf colleagues, and they were both having a conversation about how they get treated by staff and customers. I remember Kieran (profoundly Deaf) saying how he had seen  customers literally leave his till after reading his sign placed at the end of his till about his hearing impairment. This interaction also made me want to learn about deaf inclusivity and awareness.

Much  like any learning any language, you become invested in the culture and history behind it -  and BSL is no different. It is also very beautiful to do and watch, and also has very many deaf and non-deaf related benefits.
